The Zamechover Progressive Benevolent Association was established in 1912 in New York by immigrants hailing from Zamechov, Ukraine. The Society offered philanthropic aid in addition to their burial grounds. The society utilizes grounds at both Mount Hebron Cemetery and Cedar Grove Cemetery.

In 1847, there were about 958 Jews residing in Zamechov. This number decreased slightly to 895 by 1897. Zamechov is home of numerous prominent Torah scholars and for the observance of Hasidism. The Jewish community had no organized institutions but engaged heavily in anonymous giving such as welcoming guests and “bikur cholim” (visiting the sick). Torah study took place in the town’s synagogue in the evenings. In 1917-1918, a kindergarten was established alongside some public schools.

During this time, Zionists youth groups were formed, including the Ze’irei Zion (Young Zionists). During the change in regime, Petlyura’s Gangs instigated numerous progroms, causing severe damage and loss to Zamechov’s Jewish community. As a result, self-defense groups were quickly organized. These groups, however, were overpowered by German forces following their invasion in June of 1941.
