1st Potokzloty Society

The Potokzloty Society was established in New York by immigrants hailing from Potokzloty (now Zolotyi-Potik), Ukraine. Initial Jewish settlement dates to the 18th century, with there being just over 300 Jews in 1765. This number increased to over 1200 in the 1880s, but decreased to just under 900 by 1921, likely due to the World War. Potokzloty’s Jews engaged mostly as craftsmen (shoemakers, trailers, etc.). From 1851-1859, the Hasidic Court of Dovid-Moshe Friedman was in effect. Th Chortkiv Tsadik Court followed after. During the interwar period, the Jewish community of Potokzloty established various Zionist organizations.

The Germans entered on July 10th, 1941. They quickly established a Judenrat, and conscripted many to force labor. In the fall of the following year, Potokzloty’s Jews were deported to Buczacz. A memorial marker is in the works of being installed by Milton Koch, giving the Jews of Potokzloty’s Jews proper and lasting recognition.
